13-18 cm (5-7") Abundant in migration along East coast, rare along West. Nests on Tundra, in migration along beaches, shores, mudflats, winters in South America.
Sparrow-sized "peep" sandpiper; straight, blunt-tipped, black bill; black legs.
Summer: grayish-brown upperparts, white underparts.
Winter: grayish above, white below. Very similar Western Sandpiper usually has longer, thinner-tipped bill, higher call.
Song: "chit" or "cheh".
