13 cm (5") Common in eastern spruce-fir or mixed forests in northern range; pine-oak in Appalachians. Rare in west.
Male: bright orange or yellow around the head and the flaming throat is distinctive. Broad white wing patch. White in outer tail feathers.
Female and Immature: pale version of the male. Two white wing bars. Streaked back. Pale yellow or buffy eyebrow stripe.
Usually seen in upper branches.
Song: very high and thin.
