14 cm (5-6") Common. Nests in northern coniferous forests; stunted spruce mostly in northern Canada.
Male: striped gray warbler with a solid black cap and white cheeks. White underparts. Black striped sides. Resembles Black-and-white Warbler.
Female: finely streaked crown. Grayish green above. White or pale below may be washed in yellow. Two white wing bars.
Immature and Winter: faintly streaked breast. Usually pale yellowish legs. White undertail coverts. Resembles Bay-breasted and Pine Warblers.
Song: a thin mechanical "zi zi zi".
